D.O.T. Saliva Testing
Currently there is ONLY one type of saliva test approved and available for D.O.T. Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing. The only approved D.O.T. saliva test available is an alcohol test strip or swab. Testing a saliva specimen for drugs such as amphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, opiates and PCP is NOT a federally approved DOT test at this time (urine is the only approved specimen for a DOT drug test.
Using a saliva screening test for identifying if an individual has blood alcohol concentrations greater than 0.02% is a D.O.T. approved saliva screening test. This saliva test can be used as an alcohol screening device for random, for cause, reasonable suspicion, pre employment, post accident and follow up alcohol screenings. Keep in mind that if a positive result of 0.02% blood alcohol concentration or greater is the result then a confirmation test must be administered after 15 minutes, however a saliva screening device is not approved for a confirmation. For a positive alcohol confirmation a breath alcohol test or breathalyzer must be utilized in accordance with DOT regulations.
